The Lansing Latino Health Alliance (LLHA)will soon be interviewing AmeriCorps members for an available position. An AmeriCorps member will serve with the LLHA Board of Directors to implement its mission to improve the health status of Latinos in the greater Lansing area. Nutrition Education and Exercise Promotion are two essential factors in this mission. The AmeriCorps member will have the following responsibilities:

  • Compile and develop informational materials either on Nutrition or on Exercise in English and Spanish
  • Develop outreach strategies to conduct bilingual workshops and seminars on Nutrition Education or Exercise Promotion in the greater Lansing Latino communities
  • Determine the appropriate loci and community partners for conducting the workshops and seminars
  • Prepare bilingual outreach/publicity materials for recruiting participants
  • Conduct workshops/seminars on the topic in the Lansing area
  • Collaborate with and through local organizations and Latino-serving businesses to reach members of the Latino communities; e.g., local churches providing Spanish-language services, various Latino-focused community organizations, Spanish-language media outlets, as well as specialty markets and other commercial locations frequented by Lansing Latinos.
  • ·Solicit gift incentives relative to nutrition or exercise for participants and healthful snacks for consumption at workshops and seminars from LLHA’s partners and supporters in the community
  • ·Report regularly to LLHA's Board of Directors on project status
  • ·Bilingual English/Spanish in speaking, listening, writing, reading skills
  • ·Some knowledge of current standards for either Nutrition Education or Exercise Promotion
  • ·Have direct experience with Lansing’s Latino community
  • ·Awareness of and sensitivity to underlying cultural issues and characteristics of the target communities
  • ·Ability to take initiative, work independently, follow through, and maintain communication regarding the status of task completion
  • ·Ability to work well with people of all age groups and of diverse socio-economic populations
  • ·Good public speaking skills
  • ·Good organizational skills
  • ·Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

 The LLHA will provide office space, telephone, computer, internet service and supplies to support the position. The AmeriCorps member will serve under the administrative supervision of the LLHA president. In addition, s/he will work in consultation with two members of the Board of Directors who are specialists in Nutrition and Exercise

 Schedule: 25 hours per week, 450 hours total, May 5 to September 19, 2014. Specific weekly schedule to be mutually determined.
